After just returning from a rather harrowing experience in Lebanon, I have decided to really contemplate whether democracy as the Lebanese know it, can survive in Lebanon, post battle. I guess democracy can be seen as the panacea of the west. Just look around - democracy has provided much stability in the western world, yet it seems that in parts of the middle east - the ideology underpinning a democracy just doesn't seem to render nearly as successful. The Lebanese government's fragile sovereignty has been severely tested by the ruthless and ill-thought attacks by Israel.
I am no supporter of Hezbollah or any organisation that purports violence and willful destruction of any nation. I think both an Israeli State and a Palestinian State should exist and I believe that the creation of two states would go a long way to bringing together the similarities (as crazy as it sounds) of people in the middle east. The Muslims want Palestine to exist as a separate state, as do many other middle eastern people. I am neither a Muslim or Jew and I can see benefit in the existence of two states. I can see how the establishment of two states will strengthen democracy in Lebanon. For one thing, it will mean that Hamas may have nothing to fight for, and for Hezbollah, nothing to resist.
Yes, I know I am oversimplifying the situation - but really, the survival of Lebanon as a democracy comes down to Lebanon's ability to govern. They are unable to govern when Hezbollah has not been disarmed, and when Israel decides it should invade the country.
